Striim 5.4.2 on macOS: Using Oracle Instant Client 26ai Drivers

This one may not affect many people, but you never know. I ran into it while setting up Striim Platform 5.4.2 on my Mac, and it’s worth writing down for anyone else who does the same.

What You Need Installed

To run Striim on macOS against Oracle Database 26ai, you need two pieces of software:

• Striim Platform 5.4.2
• Oracle Instant Client 26ai (23.26.2.0.0)

Installing both isn’t enough on its own. Out of the box, Striim ships with its own Oracle driver jars (ojdbc-21.jar and xstream-21.jar). On my setup, those needed to be replaced with the jars that come with Instant Client, and Striim needed to be told where the Instant Client libraries live.

The Steps

The commands below use two variables so you can adjust the paths for your own machine. Set them to wherever you installed Striim and Instant Client.

export STRIIM_HOME=/path/to/Striim
export OIC_HOME=/path/to/instantclient

Step 1: Remove the Bundled Oracle Jars

Remove ojdbc-21.jar and xstream-21.jar from the Striim lib directory. I’d suggest moving them to a backup folder outside lib rather than deleting them, so you can roll back if needed.

mkdir -p $STRIIM_HOME/lib_backup
mv $STRIIM_HOME/lib/ojdbc-21.jar $STRIIM_HOME/lib_backup/
mv $STRIIM_HOME/lib/xstream-21.jar $STRIIM_HOME/lib_backup/

Step 2: Copy the Instant Client Jars into Striim

From the Instant Client directory, copy ojdbc8.jar, xstream.jar, and ucp.jar into the Striim lib directory.

cp $OIC_HOME/ojdbc8.jar $OIC_HOME/xstream.jar $OIC_HOME/ucp.jar $STRIIM_HOME/lib/

Step 3: Point Striim at Instant Client

Edit $STRIIM_HOME/conf/startUp.properties and set NATIVE_LIBS to the directory where Oracle Instant Client is installed.

NATIVE_LIBS=/path/to/instantclient

Step 4: Start Striim

Start Striim from the bin directory.

$STRIIM_HOME/bin/server.sh

Verify It

Before starting Striim, confirm the right jars are in place and the old ones are gone:

ls $STRIIM_HOME/lib | grep -Ei 'ojdbc|xstream|ucp'

You should see ojdbc8.jar, xstream.jar, and ucp.jar, and you should not see ojdbc-21.jar or xstream-21.jar.
